MELVA MEDINA ORTIZ

Melva was born March 21, 1964, in Morelia, Michoacan. She graduated in Professional Studies of the Visual Arts at La Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado, La Esmeralda, an affiliate of El Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. She received a Masters Degree in visual arts, with a specialty in printmaking, in 1999 at La Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City.

She maintains an active role in her field by attending courses and seminars as well as participating in special projects. She has taught sculpture, painting and drawing and has played an important role in a number of public and private institutions. Her work as an artist and educator at El Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey is noteworthy.

At present, she is the director of NAHUALLI casa de los artistas, a space where she exhibits her graphic art and sculptures. Some of her time is devoted to giving courses in sculpture and drawing to art students, professional artists and the general public.

Her work has been exhibited in more than forty expositions in different museums and galleries in Mexico. It has the distinction of being viewed at La Academia de San Carlos, El Museo de la Cultura Tlatilca, El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Internacional Rufino Tamayo, El Centro Cultural Universitario, El Museo de la Ciudad de Mérida, Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, Galería Siglo XXI del Centro Médico Nacional, among others. Today, her pieces are part of collections from around the world, especially those in the United States and Canada.

Her work speaks to us through the women she portrays who communicate their feelings, how they live and what they contribute to the events of their lives. Interwoven with elements of mysticism and contemporary poetry, the imagery found in her art derives from her latina culture and prehispanic roots. Distinctive for themes that move beyond the commonplace, her iconography reflects the themes of seduction, eroticism, and the metaphysical, and attempts to include visual representations of literary metaphor. She has an unusual ability to convey in great detail the elements that comprise her work while demonstrating at the same time a superb mastery of technique and an extraordinary power to captivate the viewer.
